Adopt-a-Family for Christmas -Sponsors        Specific Instructions and Frequently asked Questions

Adopt-a-Family Ministries was begun to accomplish two purposes:

  • To help families in need, showing them love of Christ through serving and through the relationships we develop with the families.

  • To provide opportunities for Followers of Jesus who desire to live their faith out through practical and meaningful service to people throughout the year.

We encourage you to pick a size family that you could also do Thanksgiving for.  If you signed up for BOTH Thanksgiving and Christmas, simply contact the family for their Christmas “wish list” when it is convenient for you.  Remember that you are not obligated to get everything on their list.

What is Adopt-a-Family for Christmas and how does it work?

Providing gifts and support for a family in need (food is encouraged, but optional).  The general amount suggested per person is $35-$50 max.  As with the Thanksgiving baskets, you may also put other goodies in if you choose, i.e. Card, pictures your kids draw, etc.  Have fun with it!

When do we get our family and can we pick the size family I want?

This year, it is our goal to give you all the info for your adopted family when you sign up at the Adopt-a-Family Table at a weekend service starting Dec. 1st and through Dec. 16th.  If you sign up online http://www.outreachatbayside.com/AdoptAFamily.htm, we will contact you ASAP to give you your family.  Please give us the best # to reach you.

What is the cutoff date for families who wish to be adopted?

All families must be registered by Monday, Dec. 8, 2008.

Do we need  to do food as well as gifts?

The main need is gifts, but if your budget allows, food would be a wonderful bonus.

Wow, $35-$50 a person plus food sounds like a lot.  Do we have to spend that much?

No.  However, the value of the gifts needs to be comparable as many of the low-income families live very close together and we are trying to avoid too large of a gap in terms of gifts from one family to the next.

Can we pick the ages of the children and gender?

You can if this information is available.  The sooner you confirm the sooner we can try to find a family that fits your preference.  Please be understanding as it may be a challenge to do with all the other factors involved.

If parents didn’t write anything down for themselves, should we buy a gift for the parent(s) also?

This is always a nice gesture.  It is “Adopt-a-Family” not just kids.

What if the family we adopted for Thanksgiving is too large or us to handle for Christmas?

This is a wonderful opportunity to partner up with your small group, friends, relatives, or your co-workers to adopt the family, but please consider ahead of time the needs of a family.

When do we have to deliver?

We leave this totally up to you and the family you are adopting. (However, imagine yourself as a child looking at an empty tree… the earlier the better.)

What if we cannot deliver?

First, it is a joy to do as a family or group and secondly, plus it makes our job manageable.  Feel free to deliver to the family you adopt at any time it is convenient for you.

Do you want feedback on how it goes?

Yes, Please do…This is a great encouragement to our team and helps us be more effective if you report problems as well.  We will use your stories (be brief) to encourage others (and we will use fictitious names where appropriate to protect your adopted family’s privacy).

For additional questions or information, please first contact your Adopt-A-Family Coordinator.  If unavailable e-mail Tony Daugherty spu07@yahoo.com or call at 916-296-2367.

May God bless you with the measure that you bless others!
