QUESTIONS:
Call Rob Dirkse at 532-9040 or
SPU1@sbcglobal.net
What:
Mother’s Day Baskets
Who:
Single Mothers
Why: Because Mother’s Day is a lonely day for single moms. To communicate
Christ’s Love to them
Where:
In your community and/or a low-income community in the Sacramento Area.
How:
Individuals, families and groups buy a basket (or more), and items (see
list on flier)
and assemble to be delivered
by them or Serve Partnerships Unlimited.

Before you deliver:
¨
Single moms in your
community will be delivered to by your church/ministry
¨
Any baskets that you make
that you do not have a mom to deliver to will be delivered by SPU to our
inner-city church partners or you can partner directly with them to
deliver to moms in their community. This way we are reaching beyond our
neighborhood and helping our sister churches have the same impact in
their community.
When you
deliver:
¨
Pray before you deliver –
ask God to teach you as well as minister to the moms
¨
Bring no more than 3
people per house/apt (it is intimidating to see large group at the door)
¨
Limit expectations. Some
moms are embarrassed and will not invite you in or want to talk.
¨
As you leave, ask if there
is anything you can pray about for her/family. Pray with her/them if
possible, but make sure you follow up in a week or
so to see how the situation is going.
¨
Question that may come
up: “Why are you doing
this?” A – We just want you to know that God loves you and so do we”
Keep it simple, if they want to go deeper, let God lead you.
After the
Event: Follow-up
¨
Your group or family pray
for every mom/family by name they delivered to
¨
Record of moms delivered
to (name, address, phone if appropriate)
¨
Plan to revisit the
moms/families via postcard, phone call or personal visit from
church/ministry that delivers the basket, asking I they have any prayer
or physical needs
¨
Focus on
relationship with the moms/families as opposed to just inviting them
to events.
This will communicate that we
love them whether or not they come to church or become
Followers of Jesus in the
timeframe we expect.
FUTURE IDEA:
Have a Mother’s Day Brunch
at the church or in a park (“neutral ground”) on Saturday
or Mother’s day and have something for
the kids to do (jump house, activities, etc.) so the moms can enjoy
their brunch and get to know their hosts. Have women from the church
sit with the moms and host.
