Hello Friends~

Our little friends from Serna Village have a unique opportunity this year to go to BreakawayJ  I am looking for some help.

Are you already serving at Breakaway? Are you looking for a place to serve and have not signed up yet? Please consider helping in one of these way:

  1. I need 2-3 people to be at Serna Village at 4:30 pm to ride on the bus with the kids and then ride on the bus back to Serna Village at 8:30 when Breakaway is over. This may be the most exciting bus ride of your life. Think about the chitter chatter of the kids after a day at Breakaway? The questions they may have? WOWJ

  2. I am looking for 10-15 adults who can be at Breakaway no later than 5:15 to greet the kids off the bus and then escort a designated 5 kids to their small groups. You would also pick the same kids up at 8:30 from their small group, check them out with Security, and check them back on the bus.

  3. If you are leading a small group at Breakaway and have served at Serna Village before, or have worked with At-Risk kids, would you like to have a couple of kids from Serna in your group?  If so, please indicate this on your Breakaway volunteer registration form. It would be comforting for them to see a familiar faceJ

If you are free to do job #1 or job #2, you can see that there is a lot of free-time ( 3 hours) once you arrive and the kids are checked in.  The Breakaway Team would love for you to serve in another area during that time. “Floaters” are always needed, as are other areas to serve.

Please take a moment and consider the impact Breakaway will have on these little kids~ Little ones out of foster care, and tossed around most of there lives. Think what is will be like for them to experience the unconditional love of the church body and of Jesus Christ. WOW!

Please let me know if you are feeling a tug to serve during this time. Call or email if you have any questionJ

~God is good all the time and all the time God is Good~

Thank you all for meeting this week to discuss the possibilities of

Placing a dental clinic at Serna Village.  I think it was very constructive.

Here are some of the major points of the meeting:

-          The Alexander’s are considering the donation of the clinic building (like a temporary classroom)

As well as the management of the startup process for the clinic.

-          We need volunteer Dentists

-          Need material donations to sustain the clinic

-          need to explore the liability & insurance issues with the clinic

-          Should we open project to other organizations (St John’s, Acres of Hope, etc)

-          Is there one or more organizations that fund health challenges that we should contact?

-          The mission of the project should be primarily toward kids with grownups as an “also served”.

-          Need ways to engage Dentists now (treat kids at no charge at their offices…)

-          WE looked at 2 possible locations at the Serna site to place the building

See the attached flyer for an idea to get the work out to Dentists.  The idea is to have Baysiders

Take them to their dentists and have the dentists who are interested contact us.

Please correct or add any thoughts you have about the meeting.Attendees:  Joe, Jean, Julie Alexander (Westridge Builders, Inc.)

"Forgiveness" Station of the Cross  March, 2008

Wanted to let you know our little “Forgiveness” station was a success!  We had about 20 residents come through to experience forgiveness through Jesus (not through “the God of my understanding”---like many do in AA or NA). I am waiting for pictures to be sent to me and then I will forward some to you.

It was a GREAT DAY!!!!

Ps. Thank you Sherrill and Janine for being available to those who went thru!

Thursday Night CR Step Study Group

Hi - I want to update everyone on the amazing growth God is doing in the lives of the women at the Thursday night CR Step Study group at Serna.

First, for those who may not know, Celebrate Recovery is not just about people going through the Christ centered 12 steps, which we are doing on Thursday nights.  It is about the whole program.  It is about people having an opportunity to meet with other people who have the same hurts, habits and hang-ups, eat dinner with them, worship with them, share their life struggles with them and serve with them.   This is what we do at Bayside Big Group on Friday nights.

I give you this bit of information, because I have been praying for the women in my Thursday night group.  I want to see them become the future CR leaders at Serna Village.  I knew in my heart that the only way for that to happen is for them to feel confident enough to start coming to our CR Big Group on Friday nights.

Well, here is the news...last night we only had three of our six women, but those three women all stated that they would like to start coming on Fridays!!!  I am so excited!  I am not sure when they will be able to come, but the desire to come and participate with others outside their secure environment at Serna is so cool.

All these women shared how much their lives are changing because of the CR step study. All I can say is, "Praise God"!

And again, as always I want to express how I am so thankful for the privilege of serving God at Celebrate Recovery and Serna Village.

Thank you - Debra

Linus Project (Making blankets for the needy) - January, 2008

The ladies of Serna Village made AWESOME blankets for the Linus Project at our last Bayside Outreach.  These blankets will go to children escaping violent/dangerous situations. The blankets of course, provide snuggly comfort!  Way to go SERNA VILLAGE!!!!

Bayside’s faithful servants Reuben and Della Johnson put the project together!

Thanks Reuben and Della!

Reflections from the region: We must help the homeless in the new year

Published 12:00 am PST Saturday, December 29, 2007
Story appeared in EDITORIALS section, Page B6

This holiday season The Bee's editorial board asked local residents this question, "What is the most important lesson that Sacramento or the region should take from 2007, and how can it be applied next year?"

The following is from the Rev. James Richardson, an Episcopal priest and the chaplain of the California State Senate:

Our Sacramento region learned once again there are thousands of vulnerable people in our midst who barely have a roof over their head – and for many, not even that. This is not a new lesson, but the newest reminder came in 2007 with the wave of home mortgage foreclosures hitting primarily those with a toehold in the middle class.

The fact is that even before the bottom fell out of the subprime mortgage market, there were thousands of people in the Sacramento region living in substandard housing, or out of the back seat of their car, or in a cardboard box on the riverbank. Housing is a crisis that tears at the very fabric of our community.

How we respond in 2008 to the most vulnerable says a great deal about the heart and soul of our Sacramento region. Will we turn our backs and become obsessed with glitzy side issues such as building a basketball arena? Or will we act courageously with a full-court press to solve the housing and homeless crisis of our region?

We have a living beacon of hope in our community: Francis Quinn, the retired Roman Catholic bishop of Sacramento, who inspired our community to build low-income housing in midtown Sacramento – the "Bishop Quinn Cottages."

We need to build hundreds of new Bishop Quinn cottages all over our city, and we need to make housing affordable for young families with children. These are real family values that all of us should be able to agree upon.

The faith leaders from every religious community in Sacramento need to come together in 2008 on this one issue – housing – and push our political and business leaders into concrete action.

I am convinced that the purpose of life, no matter our religion or lack of religion, is being in a cause that is bigger than ourselves. We are each given a role in that cause, and a share of God's abundance to make our world a better place.

We are truly the hands, feet and active heart of God's grace, and we deepen our own lives by how we respond to the most in need.

The residents of Serna Village, like other homeless shelters

and transitional programs, have come from many different backgrounds

such as Abusive Relationships, Drug Abuse, Lack of Education and

Under-employment.  Some of us lost hope and faith that there

could be a chance that we could change.

By: Mike Camino, Serna Village

Below are the pictures from a typical Serna Village outreach. The number of participants can range from a dozen

to over a hundred.  In many cases our college team set up activities to do with the kids as well as mow lawns,

repair bicycles, wash cars and garden for the residents of Serna !!

The adult team cooks and plays with the kids while continuing to build relationships with the families of Serna

Family Community Church has now partnered with us in addition to their presences at the Outreach

they provide transportation to those residents wanting a ride to church/Sunday school !!

These families are transitioning from homelessness, alcoholism and drug addiction.

They need the love of Christ in their lives and many of them do not know Him as their Lord and savior.

“The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few”.

Thank you to all of the volunteers that make this outreach a success.

Come help the families of Serna Village enjoy an afternoon break from their daily lives and share with them the LOVE that GOD has for them by being a member of the Serna Village Bayside Outreach Team.
