| The Union Gospel Mission |
| Since 1962 the Union Gospel Mission has provided
food, clothing, shelter and a life-changing Gospel message to the
homeless of Sacramento. Founded by a group of concerned Christian men
with a staff of two, the Union Gospel Mission has grown to include 16
fulltime employees who serve more than 6,000 meals monthly to hungry
men, women and children. Every night, we offer more than 80 men a warm,
safe place to sleep. Each year, we distribute more than 28,000 items of
clothing. Toiletries, sundries, haircuts and styling are available for
women and children, and we regularly provide food baskets to those in
need.
While this material sustenance is important, we also believe in
feeding the spirit. Nightly nondenominational services and volunteer
outreach programs provide support for those who rarely hear an
encouraging word. Men who are inspired to make a real change in their
lives can take advantage of a free, nine-month drug and alcohol
rehabilitation program, complete with transitional housing, job
placement and follow-up counseling.
|
Who we serve
The Union Gospel Mission helps transform the lives of men, women
and children who are the poor and homeless of our city. Our
non-profit mission provides care to all people regardless of their
religious beliefs gender, race, or ethnic background. We offer
comfort without the need for filling out forms or making
explanations. Here, it is just enough to need help. Our trained
staff and caring volunteers provide not only physical comfort, but
also spiritual comfort through shared prayer and the simple act of
listening.
Why we serve
The Union Gospel Mission is a Christian organization dedicated to
relieving the hunger and hopelessness of all who seek refuge at our
door. Our staff works to help people find new beginnings, restore
dignity to broken lives, and provide hope. Our goal is to break the
grip of addiction, provide vocational training, and return men as
productive members of society through the teaching of God’s word.
Graduation ceremonies are hosted by churches in the Sacramento
community, showing their support for men who have stayed the course
and are expectantly looking to a new life and a new beginning.
How we serve
Our programs range from short-term food and shelter to providing
long-term aid and counseling. Among our programs are:
- A nine-month drug and alcohol rehabilitation program for men
with a sincere desire to escape the devastating effects of alcohol
and drugs. This in-house program provides for every need and is free
to every person. Men receive counseling as they progress through a
six month and three month program that teaches new behaviors and
life skills. Upon graduation men are given opportunities to serve as
interns, enroll in college, receive vocational training, and are
housed for up to one year at no cost.
- The Union Gospel Mission provides a 1000-sq-ft women’s clothes
closet, offering clean and fashionable clothing to women in need.
This facility is staffed entirely by caring volunteers and even has
a hair salon where women can have their hair cut and styled by
professionals.
- Children’s clothing is also available as well as books, school
supplies and toys for children who might otherwise have nothing.
- More than 40 churches serve as volunteers to the Union Gospel
Mission. These churches provide services nightly 360 days a year,
and much needed encouragement and inspiration to men and women from
the streets of Sacramento. Our supporting churches also provide
nightly meals, where volunteers can come and interact with others as
they serve much needed food to the hungry.

| Bayside Serving Instructions: Instructions for Small Group:
Each
service needs 7-10 servers. More can attend, but they may not be able to
actually serve food. They can greet the homeless though. (We will also be
handing out socks – if we get enough donations) We ask that the
servers arrive at the Mission by 7:15pm. That way they can sit in the back of
the worship service and leave a little early to complete the dinner prep
work (such as filling up the pitchers and placing napkins and paper cups on the
tables). The church service is from 7:30pm to 8:30pm. Volunteers then can hang
out in the dining hall or watch some of the church service after the prep work
is completed.. At 8:30pm, the doors to the church service open and the homeless get in line for food.
The servers will then serve food to the men in a buffet style setting as they go
through the food line. The food service usually ends by 9:00pm.
